Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI) is a omprehensive　research institute that carries out basic surveys, research, and　technology development, as well as testing and evaluation of technology related to automobiles.

JARI was established in April 1969 as a comprehensive research institute related to automobiles, as the successor to an automobile high-speed proving ground, which was established in 1961.

In July 2003, JARI integrated with the former Japan Electric Vehicle Association (JEVA) and the former Association of Electronic Technology for Automobile Traffic and Driving (JSK) to promote cooperation in a wide range of related industries including utomobile and related industries, energy, electric machinery, information and communications.

Through the integration, JARI also has expanded its business areas, and is now engaged in leading research to accurately grasp future trends and promote the popularization of next-generation automobiles.

And on April 1, 2012, JARI changed its status as a legally incorporated foundation, and officially started as the general incorporated foundation Japan Automobile Research Institute (JARI).

In recent years, the automotive industry and the mobility society are undergoing a major turning point in response to global environmental problems, the progress of automobile AI and IoT, diversification of needs for automobiles, and other factors.

With this background, JARI has three main areas of research: "Environment," "Safety," and "Mobility" and by engaging in advanced research that is five to ten years ahead of society’s needs, it contributes to the realization of a sustainable, safe and secure mobility society.
